Carpet is made of several types of fibers. Our carpet flooring installation team has so many years of experience, we know how to make each type look its best on your floor. You can judge the quality of a carpet by looking at the kind of fiber used. Nylon is the most popular fiber, but you may want to choose a less common synthetic fiber. Wool is the only natural fiber, and well worth the extra expense for a low traffic area like a master bedroom. With proper care, a wool carpet will last decades.

  • Nylon - colorfast and wear-resistant; stain-repelling technology is now standard
  • Olefin - not as soft as nylon; resistant to wear, stains, moisture, and mildew
  • Polyester - less costly than nylon; not practical for high traffic areas
  • Acrylic - look and feel of wool but less costly
  • Wool - luxurious look and feel; naturally soil resistant

Fiber density

You can also judge the quality of a carpet by its fiber density. Focus on the backing, not the surface, to measure density. You want to look at the amount of fiber used in the carpet as well as the closeness of the tufts. When you bend a carpet sample to make the tufts spread apart, you should see little of the backing material. In other words, the less backing you see, the better the carpet. You may see carpet grades when you are comparing products. Be aware that there is no universal standard for grading by numbers or for low, medium, and high traffic grading.
